Our First Garden

This spring we plan on making our very first vegetable garden. :o)

I'm really excited not only because I will be able to cook with veggies that are fresh, but because I think it will be a fun activity to do with Hannah. Granted she might still be a little young to completely understand what is going on, but I think she'll know how to pick the veggies. So it is something we can do together over the summer.

Now, I must admit that I really do not have the slightest idea of what I'm doing when it comes to gardening. Yes, I manage all of our flower beds around the house but I've never dealt with food. I have watched my dad maintain his garden for many years. He loves to prune and manage his yard. But I don't think I'm going to be that 'hardcore' about my garden. So I'm not really sure what I am getting myself into. All I know is that I am very excited to get started. :o)

I think we're going to do a 4 foot by 8 foot garden. My dad said that that is a good starter size. I'de like to grow cucumbers, onions, peppers, tomatoes, leaf lettuce, broccoli and potatoes.

I found a pretty cool website call GrowVeg.com and it has a garden planning tool. You can plug in your dimensions and put in what plants you want. It gives you a rough idea on the spacing you'll need between each plant so you'll know what you'll be able to fit in the space you have allotted.

Here is my garden:

Pretty cool, huh!? I think so.

I can't wait to hit up the nursery and get our plants. :o) I still have to wait awhile though...my dad said maybe around mother's day.

  1. Looks good!! I'm going to have to check out that website.

Also, you may want to read up on cucumbers. I tried some last year and was "unaware" that they need some sort of trellis to vine on. They pretty much took over my garden and the cucumbers were kind of bitter tasting. Not sure what causes that exactly, but you may find some tips that I didn't know about. Goodluck! :)

  2. I can't wait till we have a home and can plant a garden. I'll have to stick to farmers markets and the local farm selection at the store. Good luck! At least your dad is down the road if you need any help.

  3. yeah the website is pretty neat but I'm just doing the 30 day trial. I just signed up for the layout planner because I had no idea how far away things need to be planted. so know I at least know how many plants to get. I probably won't pay after my 30 day trial though.
