I did my first attempt at making homemade baby food the other day and I must say that it went rather well. 

I made, avocados, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes. It was all super easy so I am excited to make some other things: peas, green beans, and carrots are on my 'next' list.

I have been following the website WholesomeBabyFood.com. They tell you how to cook the food (if it needs to be cooked) and they tell you the ways you can store it.

I took some photos while I was making the butternut squash for those of you who are curious about making your own baby food.

First, cut the squash in half and take out the seeds.
Then, you'll need to cook the squash. The method I used for cooking the squash was to steam bake it in one inch of water for 40 minutes.
Next, you'll scrap out the meat of the squash. Discard the skins! (You can see the avocado already made   in the ice tray.)
Blend the squash in a blender or food processor. As you can see, however, I am using neither one of those things. I do not own a food processor and I broke my blender the day before making baby food--so I had to use my tiny Magic Bullet. It worked perfectly fine, but as you can see from the photo, I was not able to blend it all at one time. I plan on buying a new blender before my next food making session. I read that the blender tends to work better and get the food into a better puree.
When I blended my squash, I added some of the water from baking to thin out the puree. Since this will be one of Colson's first foods, I wanted it to be a thinner consistency so it was easier for him to eat.

When blended to the consistency you want, just pour into ice cube trays and freeze.
Once frozen, you can just pop the cubes out and put them into a labeled zip lock freezer bag.

Super super easy and I actually enjoyed making it! I can't wait to make more for the little man!

What are some of your baby food making techniques that you find work best. I am obviously not a pro or really even know what I am doing, so if you find something works better than something else, I would love to hear it! :o)

  1. I really enjoyed making my own baby food. It was really convenient and I knew where their food was coming from and how it was made.

    It's fun once they have tried different things, to mix flavors and combos. Plus, you can make it chunkier or thinner according to their tastes and preferences. You can also add in different spices to change it up. For example, cinnamon would be good with the squash since it is already a little sweet.

  3. yum! i know when i was making food for the twins, i had better luck with the blender than my food processor (although i don't have a magic bullet...but now i want one!)

    my girls LOVED sweet potato and squash baby food...now they won't touch either. turds.
