Crocheted Giraffe

I took on a little project a few weeks ago. I decided to crochet a giraffe. I have really only crocheted afghans and hats so, for me, this was a pretty major project to take on. It involved crocheting different pieces and attaching them all. I had to buy stuffing to stuff the thing. All-in-all though, it was rather easy once I got the hang of it.

I found the pattern through Ravelry. If you crochet or knit, I highly recommend this site. It is a great resource to some awesome projects! You have to sign up but it is free! There are patterns that you can buy or you can filter your search to only free patterns. It will link you to the source site of the pattern.

Yarn and Crochet

• Crochet size 5/3.75mm (F)
• 1/2 skein of yellow (Brown Sheep Sunburst Gold) yarn
• less than 1/4 skein each of purple (Brown Sheep Plum Line) and gray (Brown Sheep Ash) yarn

Body & Neck
Chain 3, join with a slip stitch

• Round 1 sc2 into each st (6 st)
• Round 2 same (12 st)
• Round 3 sc2 into every other st (18 st)
• Round 4 sc2 into every 3rd st (24 st)
• Round 5 sc2 into every 4th st (30 st)
• Round 6 sc2 into every 6th st (35 st)
• Round 7 sc all stitches
• Round 8 sc2 into every 9th st (39 st)
• Round 9 sc2 into every 10th st (43 st)
• Round 10 sc all stitches
• Round 11 sc2 into every 11th st (47 st)

Legs
With purle yarn chain 3, join with a slip stitch

• Round 1 sc2 into each st (6 st)
• Round 2 sc2 into every other st (9 st)
• Round 3 [sc2, sc2 into the next st] 3 times (12 st)
• Rounds 4-7 sc all stitches

Switch to gray yarn

• Rounds 8-12 sc all stitches

Switch to yellow yarn

• Round 13-27 sc all stitches

Stuff the leg with fiberfill very loosely

• Round 28 [skip 1, sc 2] 3 times
• Round 29 fold the leg in half and single crochet 3 st through both layers closing the opening

ArmsWork same as legs but reduce the number of rounds for each color: 6 total for purple, 4 total for gray, and 11 total for yellow.
Horns
With gray yarn pick up and single crochet 8 st at the top of the head where the horns should go.

• Rounds 1-3 sc all stitches

Switch to purple yarn

• Round 4 [sc2 into the next stitch, sc 3] 2 times (10 st)
• Rounds 5-6 sc all stitches
• Round 7 [skip 1, sc1] 5 times (5 st)
• Round 8 [sc1, skip 1] 2 times, sc1 (3 st)

Ears
Chain 10 st, turn, and double crochet 8 st. Turn again and single crochet around the border of the ear.
